What are Infused Prerolls? Your Guide to Understanding and Buying Them

Three infused prerolls placed on a brown suede surface beside a clear glass ashtray, with shadows cast by the sunlight.

When it comes to convenient cannabis products, it’s hard to beat prerolls. They’re ready made, highly mobile, and cost effective. Sometimes, though, you might want a little something extra special — that’s when it’s time to spice things up with infused prerolls

What Are Infused Prerolls?

Infused prerolls hide a delicious secret: cannabis concentrates wrapped in cannabis flower. The type of concentrate in infused prerolls ranges from hash and wax to live resin, THC diamonds, and distillate. Most infused prerolls keep the concentrate on the inside of the joint to prolong the burn time, but you may also see joints sprinkled with kief or brushed with oil around the outside.

Infused prerolls can be rolled by a joint-rolling machine or by hand. Expect the hand-rolled infused joints to cost more and burn better.

Types of Infused Prerolls

There are a few different types of cannabis concentrate that you may see used in infused prerolls.

  • Hash or kief
  • Live resin
  • Shatter
  • Sauce
  • Diamonds
  • Budder
  • Crumble
  • Live rosin or rosin
  • Moon rocks

All of these concentrates boost the overall potency of an infused joint. Some, like hash and kief, will only boost the potency a bit. Others, like crumble and budder, considerably increase the overall THC content.

In addition to potency, concentrates may also enhance the aroma and flavors of a preroll. Live resin and sauce, for example, are concentrates that contain high levels of terpenes, the compounds responsible for the scent and taste of cannabis.

If you’re not sure which type of infused preroll best suits you, you can always discuss your options with a budtender. At The Plant, our expert staff are ready to discuss your preferences in depth and help you find the best product for your needs.

Benefits of Infused Prerolls

Consumers choose infused prerolls for a number of reasons, from their increased potency to their convenience to their enhanced flavors. Here’s a closer look at some of the benefits consumers most often reference:

  • Convenience: Infused prerolls combine the convenience and simplicity of a prerolled joint with the potency and efficacy of cannabis concentrates. They are ready to smoke straight out of the package and require no maintenance or clean up (well, aside from emptying your ashtray).
  • Aroma and flavor: Infused prerolls aren’t your average joints — they offer different flavors and aromas all their own. These special treats are great to break out when you have company to share with or for when you really want to kick back and relax with something special.
  • Potency: High tolerance consumers and those who need considerable symptom relief may prefer infused prerolls to regular ones that only contain flower. That’s because concentrates lend additional potency to the mix.

Prerolls vs. Infused Prerolls: What’s the Difference?

Traditional prerolls are a consumer favorite because they’re convenient and easy to use. No grinding, no messy rolling trays — just light up and enjoy. The different sizes allow you to choose the best preroll for your needs, based on the time of day, strain potency, and joint size.

Infused prerolls, on the other hand, tend to be larger and are generally more potent. While traditional prerolls typically test between 15% and 30% THC content, it’s not unusual for infused prerolls to exceed 40% THC content. That’s thanks to the added concentrates, some types of which contain more than 90% THC, heavily influencing the overall potency of the preroll.

Some prerolls are infused with terpene extracts rather than cannabis concentrate. This doesn’t change the potency as much, but will noticeably change the aroma, the flavor, and potentially the effects of the strain.

How Long Do Infused Pre-Rolls Last?

When stored properly in a dark, temperature-stable environment in an airtight container, infused pre-rolls can last for up to six months. However, these joints are best enjoyed freshly purchased from the dispensary for the most flavorful, aromatic experience.

How to Smoke Infused Pre-Rolls

The cannabis flower burns at a different temperature than the cannabis concentrate in an infused preroll, so lighting your joint well is key for a good smoking experience. Concentrates will slow down the burn of a joint, but if it’s not properly lit, it may start to canoe and burn unevenly. Light your joint before you hit it, taking care to evenly light the tip for a smooth burn across the entire surface area.

Choosing the Right Infused Preroll

You can roll your own infused prerolls at home if you have flower, concentrate, and nimble fingers.

  1. Grind your cannabis flower.
  2. Warm your concentrate (in your hands or under a window).
  3. Place your flower on your rolling paper evenly.
  4. Gently shape the cannabis concentrate into a thin line. Place the concentrate in the middle of the cannabis flower.
  5. Carefully roll your joint, keeping the concentrate in the center of the flower.
  6. Light your infused preroll evenly.
  7. Enjoy!
