When you’re ready to explore New York’s cannabis scene, you may wonder: is there a limit to how much weed I can buy at once? The short answer is yes – but it’s a high limit, pun intended. Here’s what you need to know about buying the legal amount of weed in New York.
Cannabis purchase limits in Yonkers, New York
New York has legal purchase limits for how much cannabis you can buy in a single transaction: up to 3 ounces of cannabis flower and 24 grams of concentrates. These limits are high, so you don’t have to worry about hitting your purchase limit in a single transaction, but our budtenders will let you know if you do.
Flower purchase limits in New York
Adults over 21 in New York may purchase up to 3 ounces of flower at once (84 grams if you’re curious). This can be any combination of whole flower form, pre-ground flower, or in pre-rolled joints.
Three ounces is a lot of flower. Many people buy cannabis flower in eighths at a time, which is 3.5 grams. An eighth is ⅛ of an ounce and about 5% of what you can legally buy at once. Most pre-rolls and joints are between 0.5 grams and 1 gram, so if you bought 3 ounces of flower at once, you could roll 168 half-gram joints or 84 1-gram joints. An ounce lasts most consumers around a month, so 3 ounces could last you more than three months!
Buying three ounces of cannabis is a big commitment unless you’re hosting a really big sesh, but you can buy up to three ounces of flower at one time.
Edible purchase limits in New York
In New York, edibles fall under the concentrates category because they’re made with cannabis extracts. You can purchase up to 24 grams of cannabis concentrate at once. Edibles are measured in milligrams so you would need to buy an extraordinary amount of edibles to hit this limit.
An edible with 1,000 mg of THC would equal 1 gram or 1/24 of your legal limit. Packages of edibles in New York don’t exceed more than 100 mg of THC. You don’t have to worry about exceeding your edible purchase limits.
Vape purchase limits in New York
Vape cartridges also fall under the 24-gram cannabis concentrate limit. Vapes in New York are sold in 0.3-gram, 0.5-gram, or 1-gram quantities so that you could buy 24 1-gram carts at once, 48 0.5g carts, or 80 0.3g carts. Buying vape carts in this quantity would provide you with several months’ worth of supply, as long as it’s all stored properly.
Concentrate purchase limits in New York
Like edibles and vapes, concentrates are measured under the concentration limit of 24 grams. Most cannabis concentrates are sold in 0.5-gram and 1-gram quantities, so you can buy 24 1-gram concentrates or 48 0.5-gram concentrates at once. That’s a lot of concentrate, especially considering that concentrates are highly potent and only a small amount if used at a time.
Who sets cannabis purchase limits in New York?
The cannabis purchase limits in New York were set in the bill that legalized recreational cannabis, the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA). Passed in 2021, the bill also mandated the creation of the Office of Cannabis Management and the Cannabis Control Board, which oversee the cannabis industry in New York.
How much cannabis can I possess at any time in New York?
Purchase limits are different from cannabis possession limits in New York State.
You can legally have up to 5 pounds of cannabis flower at your residence or within the boundaries of your property. You may not have this much weed on you in public (and you would certainly smell like cannabis if you did). The concentrate limit of 24 grams remains the same.
The MRTA also set limits for home-grow: up to six plants per person, with three mature (flowering) plants and three immature (not flowering) plants at a time. Each household may grow up to 12 plants, but the CCB has not yet released guidelines for this and has until the summer of 2025 to do so.

How much is the tax on New York’s legal weed?
New York imposes a 13% excise tax on cannabis products. This is broken down into 9% for the state and 4% for the community where you buy weed.
The state doesn’t keep this money. It’s reinvested into education and community grants. Every time you buy cannabis at your local dispensary, you’re investing in your community.
Where can I smoke cannabis legally in New York?
You can’t smoke everywhere in New York, but you can smoke weed anywhere you can smoke tobacco. Specifically, you can smoke in:
